We are pleased to announce a scientific success achieved by the team of Prof. Katarzyna Hrynkiewicz from the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Staff members of the Department - Prof. Katarzyna Hrynkiewicz, Dr Dominika Thiem and Dr Bliss Furtado - will participate in the implementation of the international project SaliNova: “Advancing Europe’s Capacity to Monitor, Predict and Manage Soil Salinization for Adaptation and Mitigation with Novel Data and Tools”, funded under the Horizon Europe programme as a HORIZON-RIA — Research and Innovation Action.

The project will begin on 1 July 2026 and will be implemented over a period of four years. The SaliNova consortium consists of 19 partners from 12 countries, representing leading research centres and institutions specialising in, among others, soil science, microbiology, hydrology, remote sensing, climate modelling, data analysis and environmental policy. The aim of the project is to develop modern tools for monitoring, predicting and mitigating the effects of soil salinization in Europe. The project results are expected to support farmers, advisors, public administration and decision-makers in the more effective management of soils at risk of salinization.

Securing funding for the implementation of the SaliNova project is a major international success for Prof. Katarzyna Hrynkiewicz’s team and confirms its strong scientific position in research on soil and plant-associated microorganisms, biodiversity and ecosystem adaptation to climate change. Participation in the project also strengthens the position of Nicolaus Copernicus University in international research of significant scientific and practical importance, focused on soil protection and food security.
